Spot Cleaning Carpets

To spot clean a carpet with a stain you should first find out what exactly the carpet fiber is. Carpet fibers range from Wool Carpet, Nylon Carpet, Polyester Carpet, Olephin Carpet, Polypropylene Carpet. Additionally, new carpet fibers are being introduced all the time.

If your dealing with a solution dyed fiber or yard, you can use bleach or other harsh chemicals to release the stain. But most likely your carpet is not solution dyed. Chances are if you were to bleach your carpet, it would ruin it. So be sure and test in an inconspicuous area, such as in a close or on a scrap.

If the fiber is effected by bleach, follow these steps.

1. Remove the bulk of the liquid or solid.
2. Using a clean white rag dampened with plain water, gently blot the area working from the outside perimeter of the stain inward.
3. Continue blotting until the fluid or solid has been completely removed.
4. Next, using a mild detergent such as Woolite and a damp clean white rag, continue blotting until the area is clean.

If you are sure of the fiber content of the carpet and it is 100% nylon, you can follow more detailed instructions on my website listed below. Never poor bleach directly on to the carpet. When using bleach, apply to a clean rag and blot the area. Be sure to rinse the rag repeatedly, maintaining a clean white rag.
